The Newcastle Herald is publishing a special 16-page HMRI magazine on Friday, September 21.

This special Newcastle Herald magazine, Seeking the Cure, is published to mark next Friday’s official opening of the $90 million, state-of-the-art Hunter Medical Research Institute building adjacent to John Hunter Hospital.

Its aim is to spread the word around the Hunter of the amazing work being done by the HMRI.

A venture between the Hunter community, the University of Newcastle and the Hunter New England Local Health Network, HMRI now has a bricks-and-mortar building that will put the Hunter on the world stage of medical research, and this magazine not only looks at that remarkable building, but at the people behind the HMRI, the ground-breaking achievements it has already made and how the people of the region can help it achieve even more.

HMRI now has the most modern centre in the world seeking cures for cancer, brain and mental health issues, heart disease and doing vital research into pregnancy and reproduction, viruses, infections, immunity, vaccines and asthma, information-based medicine and public health.

These issues have touched the lives of every resident in the Hunter, and the HMRI is where future health care begins. Every hospital treatment or procedure, medication or rehabilitation has to start with an idea. And those ideas can come from right here, in our valley.
