News Article: Hunter Honda accelerates cancer survivors study
20 Feb 2006

A Hunter Medical Research Institute project which aims to identify how the care of cancer patients can be improved, has been accelerated thanks to the support of Hunter Honda.

As a result of a $23,100 donation from the Honda Foundation, which was endorsed by the Maitland-based Hunter Honda dealership, HMRI researchers now have access to a high speed scanner which can process large-scale surveys faster, more accurately and cost effectively.

HMRI researcher Allison Boyes from the Centre for Health Research & Psycho-oncology (CHeRP), says that the OpScan 6/36 equipment will help researchers to provide answers sooner for the Cancer Survival Study, which follows survivors for five years following diagnosis.

“An increasing number of people in the community are being diagnosed with cancer. This study will tell us about the physical, emotional and lifestyle issues they face from the time of diagnosis to five year’s post diagnosis. This information will enable us to provide them with the type of help they desire at various stages of the diagnosis, treatment and recovery pathway.

“Additionally, information collected through this survey will guide health policies and the provision of services to cancer patients.

“The OpScan equipment will allow us to enter detailed survey data gathered from our 1,500 participants quickly which means that we will be able to analyse the data and present some answers soon. It more than halves the time of manual data-entry and also means that we can be very confident that our data is accurate,” Ms Boyes said.

HMRI supporter and Hunter Honda dealer principal, Rob Dawes, endorsed the application to the Honda Foundation which manages funds donated by Honda dealerships for charitable purposes.

“Hunter Honda is excited to be supporting local research that has a potential impact on the health of current and future generations in the Hunter Region, as well as all over the world,” Mr Dawes said.

“In addition to CHeRP’s important Cancer Survival Study, the OpScan equipment will also be an essential resource for all HMRI researchers who are conducting large scale survey-based studies.”
